Tomahawk

Complete guide, history, guide to launch and technical sheet

The Tomahawk is a type of axe native to America and its name comes from the American Indians, specifically from the word tomahaac of the Powhatan language.

This type of axe, in the hands of a trained Indian warrior, could wreak havoc on the enemy side thanks to its convex edge that helped them make deep cuts in hand-to-hand combat.

It must also be taken into account that thanks to the hardened head of the axe, it was used as a throwing weapon.

The Indian tribes had great skill, since they were able to throw the axe with great precision and efficiency, causing heavy casualties in the ranks of the American army.

How to throw a tomahawk

THROWING A TOMAHAWK

And now, let’s get to what really matters: how the Tomahawk is thrown correctly..

STEPS TO THROW A TOMAHAWK

  1. Grab the axe firmly by the bottom of the handle
  2. 90º angled elbow
  3. bend the knee
  4. Using the arm more than the body
  5. Place the axe at the height of the shoulder blade
  6. Throw with precision

PROS:

Due to its lightness, compared to other axes, the Tomahawk is much easier to rotate.

On the other hand, its smaller and finer edge makes penetration into the wood easy.

Generally speaking, it’s a much more manageable axe.

CONS:

The lightness of this ax also has its point against it, since it is more difficult to control its trajectory, you have to hold the handle very tightly because when you throw the Tomahawk it tends to go up.

TOMAHAWK TECHNICAL SHEET

In the origins of the Tomahawk its head was made of stone blades, but over time they were replaced by iron or bronze blades.

Design-wise, it was originally based on Royal Navy axes, as they were used as a trade item with Native Americans, and the British design, with more influences derived from the Vikings of earlier centuries.
